Get Ahead of Hormonal Changes That Causes Hair Loss

Updated: 3 days ago

You're properly wondering how your hormones can affect your hair growth. Well, hormones have a surprising impact on your hair. Find out everything about it here.

How Are Hormones and Hair Loss Related? If you're in your 30's or older, you might have seen old pictures of yourself and wondered where 'all that hair' went. Well, your hormones probably have something to do with it. As we grow older, our hormones also tend to wane and go off balance. When this happens, hair loss is almost inevitable.

With that said, let’s take a look at some of the hormones we can blame for hair loss… DHT: The Hair Loss Hormone : Some male hormones [also called androgens] are responsible for pattern hair loss in both men and women. This baldness pattern starts when there are high levels of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the scalp. Low levels of female h

ormones could trigger these male hormones to increase in women and cause hair loss.

Progesterone The Progesterone hormone is produced during ovulation but decreases after menopause. So, to fix this lack of Progesterone, the body goes ahead to make an adrenal cortical steroid called Androstenedione. The production of this hormone leads to hair loss. Estrogen In pregnancy, hair loss usually occurs when your estrogen levels increase and then decrease suddenly. When the estrogen levels are high, it interferes with the normal hair growth cycle and causes hair follicles to stay active even when it’s time for them to enter the Telogen [or resting] phase. So, the hair continues to grow throughout the pregnancy and after childbirth, estrogen returns to normal [and the hair follicles rush into the resting [Telogen] phase]. This sudden change ends up causing retarded growth and excess hair loss. This can also be known as postpartum hair loss. Thyroid Thyroid hormones have a positive effect on hair growth. But in cases where they're produced in low amounts [called hypothyroidism], your hair becomes thinner, weaker, and breaks. Plus, hypothyroidism also causes hair to fall off the eyebrows as well. And in serious thyroid condition, Telogen Effluvium develops. This is where hair keeps falling off as it entered the Telogen [resting] phase prematurely. Prolactin High Prolactin levels cause hair loss in a similar pattern as the female androgenic alopecia. This happens when it interferes with the normal ovarian production of estrogen.

Best Ways To Handle Hormonal Imbalances and Prevent Hair Loss The good news? Thanks to scientific research, there are now many options in restoring your hormones to their normal levels: Hormonal Blood Testing As we get older [especially our middle ages], our hormones will wane too and many issues – including hair loss – tend to arise. That’s why we run a full checkup of DHT, Progesterone, Estrogen, Prolactin, and Thyroid hormones [among many others] to clarify if it’s an imbalance that’s responsible for your hair loss or something else. The results of the checkup will help you with:
